In 1863 the congress of the United States authorized a new mint in Carson City. In 1866 construction began on the new mint and in December of 1869 – the building was finished. In 1870, the Carson City mint began producing silver and gold coinage for the United States. Beginning with Seated Liberty Quarters, Seated Liberty Half Dollars, Seated Liberty Dollars, Gold Half Eagles, Gold Eagles and Gold Double Eagles, the Carson City Mint would go on to produce Seated Liberty Dimes, Twenty-cent Pieces, Trade Dollars and Morgan Dollars until ceasing operation entirely in 1893.
Northern Nevada Coin has three locations with or flagship shop located directly across the street from the Carson City Mint building (now home to the Nevada State Museum) where occasionally they still fire up coin press number one to produce commemorative coins.
