Description
1890-S Morgan Dollar NGC MS-62 Redfield Hoard. This coin was part of the Redfield Hoard, belonging to LaVere Redfield’s collection of 407,000 Morgan and Peace dollars discovered in Reno, Nevada, after his death in 1974. Dubbed the “Silver Dollar King,” Redfield had a notable distrust in banks and paper money, instead choosing to hoard large amounts of silver dollars in his home. Though it is estimated that he collectively hoarded well over 400,000 coins, there were two famous burglaries, one in 1952 and another in 1961, in which together it is believed that over 370,000 silver dollars were stolen. After the thefts, in which it is believed that burglars fed steaks to Redfield’s guard dogs while removing the safes from his home, it is reported that Redfield threw bags of silver dollars down the coal chute in his home. Not being a coin collector, unfortunately many of the coins were subject to poor storage conditions. Even today, it is still considered to be the largest quantity of silver dollars individually owned and amassed in one place in history. The collection was sold to A-Mark Financial, some being released in holders slabbed by the Paramount International Coin Corporation.
